I’ve been off the grid these past few weeks, making the most of this time spent away from my computer. This past weekend I had the pleasure to discover a Cascadia food classic in Victoria’s historic Bastion Square: rebar.

Since 1989, rebar has been serving up the freshest, funkiest and healthiest food on the West Coast. rebar is open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch. Our fresh juice bar offers an extensive list of vegetable and fruit juices, smoothies and super-nutritious wheatgrass concoctions all made right before your eyes!

They categorize themselves as Modern Food purveyors and that is to me spot-on considering the health conscious offerings combined with an eclectic array of fantastic flavors. I can eat food like this forever hence deciding what to eat off the menu was not an easy task.

We settled on sharing dishes to sample as much as possible and we did not go wrong with our starter – yam & pepita quesadilla – and salad – Szechuan noodle salad. The spicy soy-lime sauce on the cool buckwheat soba noodles was irreproachable and so yummy we tried to go get some the following day for the ferry ride home. Unfortunately rebar was closed for B.C. Day. Good thing I got their cookbook the night before! It’s available on-line and

Although [they]‘re not yet taking credit card numbers online, just fill out this handy form and one of the authors, Audrey or Wanda, will call you back to get the info. Wouldn’t you rather speak to a real person anyway?

Don’t start lining-up at my place just yet though; I still need to find the time to actually cook some of these delicacies first.
