Race to the Bottom

‘The upcoming US presidential election is largely a referendum on Obama, and whether or not he’s going to pass the leadership threshold in the eyes of the voters’ eloquently says Todd Harris, a Republican strategist who worked on McCain’s 2000 presidential bid. Clearly it is not about Senator McCain himself, as the historically low approval ratings of President Bush have a direct impact on the Republican party’s popularity at this time, which roughly trails the Democrats by 15 points, and many of the senator from Arizona’s policies would amount to more of the same. Yet Obama is well within reach as he is only a few points ahead of McCain.

Desperation has settled early in the McCain camp as he has brought on board advisors from the Karl Rove camp and, starting last week, the negativity has been notched up a few levels. One only has to go to McCain’s campaign web site and view some of his latest ads that blame Obama for the price of gas and compare him to Paris Hilton, an empty celebrity.

I, for one, was hoping for a different kind of campaign from this unusual Republican candidate. After all, Senator McCain has been a bi-partisan champion of sorts over the years and has been both thought of considering a party switch and a desirable vice-president candidate to John Kerry. Not that being associated with the Democrats necessarily translates into being prepared to run a different campaign but I had hopes of John McCain telling us why he, as a Republican president, would be different from the current Republican president. Not so, he figured from Hillary’s end of campaign that it was more effective to attack Obama. Win-at-all-costs rather than elevate the political playing field. With November still a few months away, let’s hope McCain’s campaign going negative will not have triggered a race to the bottom.
