This New Year is a very special one for Québec City, the city of my youth, as it will celebrate its 400th anniversary. Founded in 1608 (in case math isn’t your thing…), there has been roughly 146,000 days or 3.5 million hours since Samuel de Champlain founded this beautiful city listed by UNESCO as part of our World Heritage.
It is the only North American city to have preserved its ramparts, together with the numerous bastions, gates and defensive works which still surround Old Québec. The Upper Town, built on the cliff, has remained the religious and administrative center, with its churches, convents and other monuments like the Dauphiné Redoubt, the Citadel and Château Frontenac. Together with the Lower Town and its ancient districts, it forms an urban ensemble which is one of the best examples of a fortified colonial city.
Festivities kick-off on New Year’s Eve with
a spectacular display of fireworks and visual effects will light up the sky as the site throbs to the beat of the music. This exceptional and unforgettable New Year’s celebration in the enchanting decor only found in Québec City in winter will mark the start of a fabulous year of festivities!
but June 3rd will mark the beginning of the 120 days of constant celebrations around the Espace 400e.

July 3rd will be the official celebration of the 400th anniversary and you can bet the party will be memorable. Although I do not yet have plans to attend myself, I will surely be there in thought and thankful for the great years I had in Québec City.
