History cannot save him

The title of Helen Thomas’ latest piece on the Bush administration captures well the fate of the outgoing 43rd president, who gave his last White House press conference this week without calling on the storied reporter. Thomas has covered every President since she started covering President-elect JFK and is known for her ‘difficult’ questions, that is, for asking what we all wish journalists would ask but rarely do.

Asked during this last meeting with the press at the White House if he thought’ in retrospect that [he had] made any mistakes’, G.W.Bush answered that the ‘Mission Accomplished’ debacle, some of his rhetoric and the attempt to reform Social Security were mistakes and then said the following:

There have been disappointments.

Abu Ghraib, obviously, was a huge disappointment, during the presidency.

You know, not having weapons of mass destruction was a significant disappointment.

I don’t know if you want to call those mistakes or not, but they were — things didn’t go according to plan, let’s put it that way.

And, anyway, I think historians will look back and they’ll be able to have a better look at mistakes

Ask the families and parents of the 3,000+ dead American soldiers how ‘dissappointed’ they feel, and the 1,000,000+ Iraqi casualties (explanation for this number). President Bush’s whole sentence does not even really make any sense. If anything, it will be a nice change to have an articulate President for the next few years.
