For several years while living in France my friends would refer to beer as a ‘binche’, as in come over and we’ll have a binche. I never knew why this slang word was used other than the fact that it was a city in Belgium but I adopted it as I liked how it sounded, and, very simply put, everyone knew what I was talking about when I would refer to beer this way.
What would you know last week when over at my local Belgium delicatessen beer joint – Stella’s on the Drive (they have an impressive vast array of beers) when I came accross a selection from a very small brewery called la Binchoise. Although it is clear that their relatively young history is not at the source of the slang word my friends used, I took a trip down memory lane and ordered the 8% Brune, which is desribed as follows:
Pours a dark brown with a fizzy and thin brown head that lasts. Aroma is malty and coffee like with some dried fruit flavors such as prunes. Some chocolate, plum, and brown sugar.
It was a great drink enjoyed with the memory of ‘mes potes’ on my mind since nothing goes quite as well with beers as friends with whom to enjoy the said beers. Cheers!
