Disaster in Costa Rica

This photo was published in the Tico Times while I was in Costa Rica. It unfortunately captures what is happening to this beautiful country I discovered 10 years ago and that has changed a lot, specifically in the southern pacific area. Although it’s only been a decade since my first trip there, the southern pacific area of the Osa canton has already transformed from infamously having the only portion of the Pan-American highway which wasn’t paved to developments in primary forest mountain side that have fire hydrants! I’m not sure if I can depict how shocking it was for me to drive up & down roads that only accommodate 4X4 vehicles, through rivers and up hills steep enough to discourage even the most ambitious cyclist only to turn a corner towards the end of a winding dirt road and find condominiums in a gated community with fire hydrants!

What you can see on this aerial photo once was primary forest, yet land developers are under almost no regulations and are acting in very disrespectful ways towards nature as well as the people of Costa Rica. These short-sighted profit inspired developments are raping this country of what draws people to it. Hopefully some of these reckless actions are reversible and the fight is on with Ticos awakening to the loss of their country, as this trailer of the ‘Senderos del Cambio’ documentary illustrates.

You can also view this following clip, in Spanish, of the actions being undertaken by local activists to counteract the uncontrolled developments.
