A first for humankind

We now live on a planet where for the first time in history one out of every two people is living in a city. We have gone from a 25% urban population to 50% of city dwellers in less than a hundred years and this is having a powerful impact on our lives.

75% of the world’s carbon emissions are coming from these cities. China now has over 100 cities with a population of over 1 million people and in one generation has urbanized to a level which took the U.S. 150 years. There are more than 20 mega-cities of over 10 million people. South American cities like Sao Paulo pictured below are some of the many urban centers that display without any shame the great inequalities of these developments as one out of every three people living in cities live in slums. That is over one billion people.

These transformations are having some profound effects on social, economic and environmental issues and the Tate Modern had an exhibition last year to explore these issues and many more. I did not get the chance to see the exhibit but the content on their web site is very interesting and worth some time to explore our changing world. Wallpaper also has an in depth slide show of the exhibitions’ work if you feel more inclined to visualize.
